Summer Learning Journey

The fist settlers to come to New Zealand must have brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a waka to reach New Zealand. To this day people of New Zealand still use waka's. Instead of using their waka to transport them from a place to another, they sometimes use waka's in special events like sports such as Waka Ama. Waka Ama is where boys and girls can compete in competition's.

  1. Kia Ora Lucy,

What an awesome blogpost! I especially like that you included an image and elaborated on the use of Waka's today.

Have you had a look at the Waka Ama activity? It has a video of a Waka Ama race that you can watch. Maybe try that activity next!

I look forward to reading more of your blog posts soon!

  3. Hey Lucy,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team. I will also be reading and commenting on your blog over the summer. I hope you are enjoying the SLJ activities and also having fun with your family and friends.

I enjoyed reading your blog post about the first settlers of New Zealand. It was interesting that you mentioned Waka Ama in this post as there is an activity closely related to that topic in Week 1, day 1 - bonus activity.

Waka ama race is something that I would not do because I would get covered with water and I would be sweating in the sun! Also, I think that paddling on the waka would be extremely hard for me as I don't have very strong arms. Would you want to be in Waka ama race? If yes, do not hesitate to write your opinions and thoughts in the comment below :)

    All the best,
    Jade C.
